Jaco, pronounced “ha-co” is located in the county of Garabito in the province of Puntarenas along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Nearly 10,000 residents populate Jaco with thousands of tourists year round come to visit this tropical oasis. Only 1.5 hours west of the international airport of San Jose, the Juan Santamaría International Airport, which once was a quiet airport now operating with numbers well over 5 million passengers walking through their gates.
Jaco, Costa Rica is a beautiful area where the “city life” meets the ocean break, truly a surfers paradise. No shortage of things to do in Jaco, with hundreds of stores, restaurants, bars, and hotels! Jaco has become one of the most popular destinations in the whole country.

Jaco’s beach is 4km (2.5mi) long with plenty of different breaks for surfing. All levels of surfers are welcomed here at Jaco. South end of Jaco is recommended for beginners as it has smaller waves perfect of learners, as you further your way to the north side of Jaco you will see the break differ with larger waves and a heavier break. Always recommended that you take caution when entering new waters as you may not know of hidden rocks, currents, and rip tides, luckily Jaco has no close rocks!
Jaco that lies against the Pacific Ocean and at the foot of the surrounding mountains creates a humid climate reaching around 80%-90%. The temperature is normally between 24º-32º (95 ºF) during the daytime and at night time around 26º (75 ºF). Costa Rica in general has basically two seasons; Dry season & Rainy season (also known as Summer / Winter) Jaco is in a tropical climate zone with distinct seasons from July – December for the Rainy season, and January – June the Dry season. During the rainy season, Jaco normally sees rain during the late afternoon and night time, with a beautiful sunny morning. Closer to October is known to be the heart of the rainy season in the area of Jaco and can rain throughout the day for multiple days!
The Tarcoles River is world known for the large amount of Crocodiles that live within, crocodiles reaching as large at 7 meters (22Feet). On the HWY 34 in-route South to Jaco you cross the bridge where you always see people on the side with their cameras in hand! If you’re looking for a closer experience travel 5 minutes further South into the small fishing town of Tarcoles and there are plenty of companies that take tours up the river, teaching you about the history, culture, and wildlife that surrounds the river.

Hermosa Beach is the real surfers paradise! With massive waves that break right close to shore. Only recommend if you are a surfer to enter the waters as there are currents & rip tides. One of 3 Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica, always remember that this is the Playa Hermosa of Puntarenas, just South of Jaco.

Blue waters surrounding the island makes it a perfect place for snorkeling with an abundant of fish. Tortuga Island should be on your bucket list if you’re visiting the Central Pacific.
Feel the rush and raft the Costa Rican rapids just 1 hour South of Jaco. Outside Quepos we use the Savegre and Naranjo Rivers that range from class 3-4 perfect for beginners and changeling enough for those who have rafted before. A great experience that everyone should try! Depending on the season the water levels can change making it more challenging
Zip Line in Jaco is non the lest the second most popular activity around. Zip down the mountain side by cable with stunning views of the mountain side and Pacific Ocean. Zip line tour ranges about 2 hours in length and perfect for the whole family! This tour is based on climate and will not be able to operate in the rain as it can become dangerous.
Jaco, Costa Rica has plenty of options for vehicles. Depending on what you are looking for there are plenty of options. The perfect day time beach cruiser are the scooters, that seat two people and the cheapest way to feel the breeze and get some sun cruising alongside the coast. If you looking for something bigger you have, dirt bikes, motorcycles, atvs and even side by sides “Buggy” as they are called here in Jaco.
